Springfield Thunderegg Rock Club

 Come learn with us!

The Springfield Thunderegg Rock Club has been in existence for decades.  In fact, it was due to our Club's efforts that the Thunderegg was designated as Oregon's Official State Rock in 1965.

The Club holds membership in:

*   The American Federation of Mineralogical Societies

*   The Northwest Federation of Mineralogical Societies

*   The Oregon Council of Rock & Mineral Clubs Inc.

Become a Member  - Join us at our monthly meeting to learn more.

We hold monthly meetings at 6:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, 215 West "C" Street, in Springfield, Oregon 97477.  Guests are always welcome.  See the membership page for information about joining the club.

NO MEETINGS in August and December.   Rather than our usual monthly meetings, we hold a picnic for members in August and a Holiday party for members in December.

More about our Club

We strive to spark interest and encourage study of gems & minerals. We hold monthly meetings with a variety of topics and frequently invite outside speakers to present.  Topics may include various aspects of geology, lapidary arts and techniques.   The club sponsors field trips throughout the year, many for specimen collection, but museum or other educational trips are also common.  We publish a monthly newsletter with educational material as well as keeping members informed of club activities and of related events in the Northwest.  As a member of the NFMS and AFMS we have access to a large library of reference materials.   We also have an ongoing display of specimens at the Springfield Public Library, and have done short term displays at a number of local community centers, including the Springfield Museum.   We have hosted an annual Lapidary Show for the public with specimens for sale and live demonstrations of lapidary techniques for the past 63 years.  We encourage folks to enjoy our beautiful area by going outside and hunting for rocks! In support of this, in 2022,  the club donated a set of rockhounding guide books for Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Nevada to six local libraries near Springfield/Eugene.

Willamalane's Rock Workshop

We have provided volunteer instructors for Willamalane's rock workshop for many years.  They can help you learn how to cut and polish your rocks as well as help with identification, characteristics and many other lapidary questions. The two organizations are separate entities, you do not need to be a club member to use Willamalane's facilities.

Annual Scholarships

We award annual several $1000 scholarships University of Oregon Earth Science Graduate students and to Springfield high school students planning to major in Earth Sciences.

Display in the Springfield Library

Our Club has a display in the Springfield Library. The display changes quarterly, so try to pop in and see the new one every few months.
